Sunflower Pharmacist awarded NCPA Leadership Award

Date: 10/12/16

Jonalan Smith, pharmacist and vice president of pharmacy services at Sunflower Health Plan, was awarded the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Leadership Award on September 24, 2016, at a ceremony during the 136th Kansas Pharmacists Association (KPhA) Annual Meeting and Trade Show in Wichita, KS.

The NCPA Leadership Award is given to a KPhA member who assumes the role of providing leadership to the KPhA organization by serving as the president of the KPhA board of trustees. Smith is currently serving as the KPhA board president-elect and will be KPhA president in 2017.

Smith supports KPhA by providing resources, knowledge and participation in committee work. After his graduation from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in 2006 he went on to complete an executive residency at the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) in Alexandria, VA. During his time there he helped advance the practice of long-term care pharmacy through advocacy initiatives, and he created and mobilized student chapters of ASCP. He assisted the professional affairs staff on practice related standards.

Smith joined Genoa Healthcare in 2007 as a pharmacy manager and held several different roles including regional operations manager and national sales manager during his seven years with Genoa. He then joined Sunflower Health Plan in January 2014 as director of pharmacy services. In August 2015, he moved into his current role as vice president of pharmacy services, overseeing the pharmacy benefit and pharmacy department of Sunflower.

Previously Smith served on the KPhA board of district directors representing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians that live in the northeast part of the state. He continues to provide leadership to KPhA as chair of the membership committee, chair of the policy and procedures committee, and as a governmental affairs committee member and the KPhA Medication Therapy Management (MTM) workgroup. Pharmacists like Smith help KPhA stay at the forefront of Kansas pharmacy through advocacy and healthcare innovation.

The Kansas Pharmacists Association was established in 1880.
